How to Use a Manual Swager
Preparation
Start by cutting the cable, wire or pipe cleanly to length and removing any burrs or frayed strands, since a rough end will sit poorly inside the ferrule and weaken the finished joint. Selecting the correct ferrule for the material and diameter you're working with matters just as much at this stage as the cut itself.
Setup
Slide the ferrule onto the cable or pipe end and position it in the correct jaw of the tool, lining it up so the fitting sits centred and square rather than at an angle. Taking a moment to double-check alignment saves having to redo the crimp later, since a misaligned fitting rarely compresses evenly.
Compression
Squeeze the handles firmly and steadily until the jaws close fully around the fitting, applying even pressure rather than short bursts that can leave the crimp uneven. If your tool has a snap-over-centre action, you'll feel or hear it lock once full compression has been reached, your cue that the swage is complete.
Check
Once the swage is done, give the fitting a visual check for cracks or splits, then give the cable or pipe a firm pull to confirm the connection holds under tension. A quick check catches most issues early, before the fitting is put under real load.
